How long does copyright last?

Typically, copyright protection will last the author’s life plus another 70 years. As a reminder, copyright refers to creative works. However, there are certain factors that may change how this calculation works.

If a work is a work made for hire, an anonymous work, or a pseudonymous work, the copyright term is different. It will either last 95 years from the year of first publication or 120 years from the year of creation, whichever of these two options expires first.

If a work was created before 1978, things get a bit more complicated, as the laws evolved over time. These works are protected 95 years from the date of publication.
